Telangana State Govt. Aims to Make Hyderabad One of Top 30 Cities Worldwide

The state government of Telangana has set an aim to make Hyderabad amongst the top 30 cities in the world. K.T. Rama Rao (a.k.a. KTR), who is the state Minister for Municipal Administration & Urban Development (MA & UD) announced last week that the state government plans to make Hyderabad a world-class city and be one of the top 30 cities in the world, “apart from the best cities in the country, we want to compete with the top 30 cities in the world by establishing the required infrastructure,” the minister said when he was addressing the media for the release of his department’s annual report.

“Opposition parties or people did not demand us to release this report. The idea is to promote transparency in governance by sharing achievements, project details and works planned by the department,” KTR said. The minister also mentioned that Hyderabad has been listed as the most liveable city in India consecutively for the last 6 years by global asset management firm Mercer. He added that the city of Hyderabad will continue to occupy the top spot in the purchasing power index, healthcare index, cost of living index, safety index, property price to income ratio index, traffic commute time index, climate index or pollution index.

Even in the real-estate market, Hyderabad has been the best performing residential market amongst India’s top metropolitan cities with a 142% sales growth YoY, the minister said. According to a report Knight Frank India, a real-estate consultancy firm, Hyderabad is the only city in India that has not had a single year of price decline since 2014. Hyderabad’s housing inventory overhang was 53 months during Q1 2021, which dropped by almost 50% to 27 months during Q1 2022, which is remarkable considering the drop in inventory overhang for other Indian cities has been marginal or has even increased in some cases.

The State Minister for MA&UD also said that as per the Telangana Socio-Economic Outlook 2022, the ratio of urban population in Telangana is 46.8% when compared to the national average of 31.16%. Telangana is among the top three urbanised states in the country and compares well with the urban population ratio of Tamil Nadu at 48.45%, Kerala at 47.23%, and Maharashtra at 45.23%. Amitabh Kant, CEO of NITI Aayog, said there is reason to believe that India will likely have 50% of its population living in urban areas by 2050. As Telangana is ahead of the curve, it is expected to have 50% of its population living in urban areas by as early as 2025.

Telangana’s Minister for MA&UD said that while urbanization is happening at a fast rate in the state, the Central govt. should allocate more funds & identify more Smart Cities in Telangana. Currently in Telangana, only Warangal & Karimnagar are identified as Smart Cities under the Smart City programme. The State Government executed all the works and extended financial and administrative support under the Smart Cities programme for Karimnagar and Warangal. However, Central Government cannot adopt the ‘One Size fits all’ approach. More Smart Cities and funds should be allocated to Telangana, he demanded.

Post the formation of Telangana state, the number of urban local bodies (ULBs) were increased from 69 to 142, the total area under 142 ULBs constitutes less than 3% of Telangana’s land mass area but ULBs provide nearly 2/3rd of the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). For FY22, under the Pattana Pragathi Programme, ₹2,062 crores were provided to 142 ULBs to improve sanitisation & infrastructure in the areas under the ULBs.

KTR said that the state govt. is aware about the challenges it faces to create the required infrastructure & is taking measures accordingly. Several citizen centric works were being used to provide basic amenities across Telangana. Setting up of Fecal Sludge Treatment Plants, digital door numbering & biomining are some of the initiatives being taken under the 10-point agenda designed by the state govt. and it expects to complete majority of these agendas by March 2023.
